Gubernatorial hopefuls say they're taking a "lesson" from Gov. Deval Patrick's decision to step in and help broker the successful sale of Market Basket, but a top business group said the unusual move shouldn't be a precedent-setter when it comes to private disputes.
"I don't perceive any widespread fear in the business community at all that this is going to set a precedent for the current governor, the next governor or a governor after that," said Chris Geehern, a spokesman for Associated Industries of Massachusetts. "My sense is this particular situation was really unique."
Patrick, who initially was cautious about stepping into the Demoulas family feud, said in a conference call that he didn't want to "over- or understate" the role he and New Hampshire Gov. Maggie Hassan played in discussions. But Keith Cowan, chairman of the Market Basket board, said the governors made a "significant difference" in helping push through the $1.5 billion sale.
"When we got to the interim operating agreement, I said, 'Look, I can't arbitrate this — and this is what you're asking us to do — without seeing the documents, and I don't think it's appropriate for me to see the documents,' " Patrick said. "... I can tell you, there was a point at which where, 'You're either going to have to reach an agreement, or say you can't get to an agreement, and move on. And I think you're out of time.' "
Those running to replace Patrick praised his moves.
"I think it's important to draw the right lessons from it ... to understand when you can use the bully pulpit," said Attorney General Martha Coakley.
Fellow Democratic candidate Don Berwick said he'll take "lessons" directly from Patrick's decisions, but stopped short of saying it cracked open the door for more public involvement in private discussions. "I take each situation on its own terms," he said.
State Treasurer Steve Grossman praised it as an example of "going into areas that normally aren't in the job description."
"You have to recognize that when you're dealing with a private company, you have to be invited in at some point," he said. "You can't just force your way into the door."
Jim Conroy, campaign manager for Republican front-runner Charlie Baker, said that although the state should "avoid playing a direct role in the matters of private family businesses, as governor, Charlie would have worked behind the scene to urge both parties to come to a speedy resolution to protect tens of thousands of jobs."
